(1715, Kirkharle, Northumberland, Inglaterra–6 feb. 1783, Londres).

Maestro británico del diseño naturalista de jardines. Trabajó por años en Stowe, Buckinghamshire, uno de los más renombrados jardines de la época, bajo William Kent (n. 1685–m. 1748). Hacia 1753 era el "mejorador de terrenos líder en Inglaterra. En el palacio de Blenheim creó lagos magistrales y borró casi totalmente el diseño formal anterior. Sus diseños consistían en extensiones de pasto, cuerpos de agua de formas irregulares y árboles aislados o en grupos. A menudo se considera su estilo como la antítesis de aquel de André Le Nôtre, el diseñador de los formales jardines de Versalles. El apodo Capability surgió de su hábito de decir que un lugar tenía "capabilities (potencial).
